How it is calculated

The value is converted to bytes first. Decimal units use powers of 1000, while binary units such as KiB, MiB and GiB use powers of 1024.

Common uses

  • Compare file sizes, disk capacity and cloud storage plans.
  • Translate between decimal storage labels and binary memory units.
  • Check technical notes for backups, downloads and data transfer estimates.

Quick notes

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB means 1000 bytes in decimal notation. KiB means 1024 bytes in binary notation.

Are bits and bytes the same?

No. One byte equals 8 bits, so 8 bit converts to 1 B.
